After the poem by C.P. Cavafy
A destination is only ever the pretext. The journey is what you gather along the way: the detours, the encounters, the places no algorithm would have sent you. Ithaca is built for travellers who believe the world is bigger, stranger, and more rewarding than the obvious suggests.

What Ithaca is, and what it promises.
Ithaca is a guide to the places worth your time, the ones chosen for quiet excellence. Not a list of everything, and not the obvious things everyone already knows, but the ones genuinely worth going, whether that is a restaurant that knows what it is doing or a walk that most people miss.
Some are expensive and some cost almost nothing. What they share is that someone with taste thought they were worth it. Travel research breaks the moment you leave the mainstream path, because the tools that recommend places reward whatever is already popular, and quietly flatten everywhere into the same few names. Ithaca exists to point somewhere better.
We take no commission. We run no advertising. Nothing on Ithaca is paid placement, and nothing ever will be. If it is here, it is because we believe it is worth your time.
We would rather stay small and honest than grow large and forgettable. The name is Cavafy's, from the poem where the destination is only ever the pretext, and the journey is where the value lives.
Ithaca collects as little as possible. This page explains exactly what that means.
What we collect
Your email address, if you give it to us. That is the only personal information Ithaca asks for. You give it when you subscribe, save a place, or start a trip. Nothing else is required, and there is no account beyond your email.
Anonymous visit statistics. We use GoatCounter to count page views. It sets no cookies, does not follow you across other websites, and does not build a profile of you. It tells us that a page was visited, not who visited it.
That is all. No advertising cookies, no tracking pixels, no data brokers, no ad networks.
What we do with it
Your email is used to contact you about Ithaca and nothing else. If we ever have something worth sending, we will send it. We will not send anything else.
We do not sell your email address. We do not share it, rent it, or hand it to advertisers. Ithaca takes no commission and runs no advertising, so there is nobody to sell it to.
Where your email goes
Email addresses submitted through the site are delivered to us by Web3Forms, a form service that passes the message straight to our inbox. They are then stored in that inbox, at hello@ithaca.travel, which is hosted by GoDaddy. There is no mailing list held anywhere else.
What Ithaca stores in your browser
Ithaca has no user database and no server that holds your data. Everything personal the site remembers is kept in your own browser's local storage, on your own device, and is never sent to us:
Saved places and trips. The things you save and the trips you build stay on the device you built them on.
Your email and a local sign-in. Once you have given us your email, the browser keeps a copy so the site recognises you on your next visit.
A local taste profile. The site notes which places you save and read in order to order things sensibly for you. This is the one thing worth being explicit about: it is a record of what you liked, it lives only on your device, and we never see it.
Your light or dark mode preference.
Because this lives in your browser rather than on our servers, clearing your browser data clears all of it, and it does not follow you to another device.
Other services that see you
Ithaca is hosted on Netlify, and the site loads fonts and mapping libraries from Google Fonts, Cloudflare, jsDelivr and unpkg. None of them track you, and none of them are advertising companies, but any service that sends a file to your browser necessarily sees your IP address in the process. We tell you this because it is true, not because anything is being done with it.
Your choices
You can ask us to delete your email address at any time. Write to hello@ithaca.travel and we will remove it. You do not need to give a reason.
You can also ask what we hold about you, which will be your email address and nothing else. Everything else is on your own machine, and you can clear it yourself at any time through your browser settings.
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information, you have the right to complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
